ПУ-1-3КА Control Panel
The Control Panel (Drawing # 699-7500-20) located to the cosmonaut's left side in the Vostok cabin was the cosmonaut's main panel for control. These items included Cabin Temperature, The Gas Analyzer, The Power to the Globe on the Instrument Panel, Switching the Gauge on the Instrument Panel between displaying the pressure of the two automatic systems, functions of the VZOR manual optical alignment unit, including the shutters, UHF and HF communications power, Cabin and Television Lighting, Control of the Magnitophone Voice Recorder, and additional communications and volume controls.
On the Left Edge of this panel, starting from the top we have a six-digit buttons that were used to enter a three digit code. When the proper code was entered the Lucite cover over four switches and a protected red push-button. The top switch is labeled Manual Orientation. Below this Descent III (The Final Stage of the Descent Program) was turned on and off. The red button below this started the firing of the Retrorocket TDU (Braking Impellent Installation) The remaining two switches were for turning on Oxygen and the Emergency Signal System. This black Panel measures 47cm tall and is 33cm wide. On the right side where it is electrically connected it is 7.5cm thick (in depth).
As an interesting side note, on Vostok-1 the cosmonaut (Yuri Gagarin) was not to use controls on the left side of this panel except in an emergency. In the event he was disorientated or possibly mad due to the unknown effects of space, it was seen as prudent to give this code to him in a sealed envelope.
Depending on the source the code was either 125 or 145. On later flights cosmonauts were given the code to remember and/or write in the onboard journal, and they would have needed to open this part of the panel to do manual control excercises and turn on the Manual Orientation system. When questioned by a journalist as to whether he remembered the code in 2008, Pavel Popovich responed "I remember, but why should I tell you?"

Gas Analyzer - Reset lever ГАЗОАНАЛИЗАТОР The formal name for this control is Manual Remote Control of the Gas Analyzer (рукоятка дистанционного управления газоанализатором (РДУ)

The Globe ГЛОБУС - 2 Double pole switches control the globe device on the instrument panel.
Place in Flight- Place of Landing МЕСТО ПОЛОЖЕНИЯ - МЕСТО ПОСАДКИ (switching this to landing advances the globe about 5000 km (to scale) ahead in the current flight path to mark the landing place if the TDU were immediately started)
Two-Pole Switch On ВКЛ - Off ВЫКЛ Turns electric motor drive for Globe on and off.

Control Lamp (Button) - КОНТРОЛЬ ЛАМП - pressing this button illuminates the 24 signal lights (48 light bulbs) on the instrument panel to test them.
Backlighting - Lighting ПОДСВЕТ potentiometer - adjusts light within the VZOR device «взор» — иллюминатор с оптическим ориентиром
Shutters ШТОРКИ (3 Switches) Closes the shades on the 3 illuminators. The Behind and Right Illuminators are iris like curtains. The Vzor shade is the from of a screen and is opened/closed by the leftmost in this group of 3 switches ШТОРКИ ОТКРЫТЫ
ПРАВ - Right Opens and Closes shade on Right side illuminator (porthole)
ЗАДН - Back Opens and Closes shade on Right side illuminator (porthole)

For Telephone ТЕЛЕФОН or voice comnunications two switches are placed. The first allows output to go to speakers ДИНАМИК the second switches between reception on High Frequency Channel 2 КВII and the Broadcast Radio ШБР

Code Lock - Code КОД (actual code part) and 6 buttons 1 2 3 4 5 6 that when the appropriate 3-digit code is entered opens a clear plastic cover to access the five controls mentioned below. The formal nane for this lock is the logical lock or Логический замок(ЗАУ-1)
Manual Orientation РУЧНАЯ ОРИЕНТАЦИЯ - ВЫКЛ (Turns on Manual Attitude Control - Normally Automatic but Vostok-2 though 6 all used this mode during flight)
Descent Mode 3 On-Off СПУСК III (Turning this switch on enables the Final Sequence enabling TDU Retrofire)
