Signal Table (Сигнальные табло)
4. Signal Table*. The signal table (Табло сигнальные) or alarm board of 24 lights displays various warnings, messages and status of the programmed timer unit or PVU-5V "Granite" «Гранит-5В» (e.g. Descent and the associated Working Control of the Descent Regime) and other signals from the communications and environmental control system. The Table is divided into 3 sections TS-1, TS-2, and TS-3. (ТС1, ТС2, ТСЗ) TS1 and TS2 display 10 signals each, while at the bottom of the panel TS3 displays 4.
The labels over the signal lights which include a word label and one of 3 colors are known as a transparent (транспарант). Each transparent is backed by 2 incandescent bulbs of the type SM-37****.
There are 6 red lights (Emergency Condition), 6 Amber lights (Warning Condition) and 7 known green lights **(status or information) on panels that have not been altered or erased in various museum displays. Here are the transparent labels:
1)Red (Emergency Condition): Gas on 1st Descent (ГАЗА НА I СПУСК) (Note: some sources use the roman numeral "II" here for 2nd Descent and this is seen in later panels). Fire TDU or Cancel Descent (ЗАПУСТИ ТДУ ИЛИ ОТМЕНИ СПУСК) This light was conditional and gave the pilot cosmonaut the opportunity to fire the TDU retrorocket or turn off Descent III or the final program of descent within 2 to 5 minutes time maximum. High CO2 (УГЛЕКИСЛЫЙ ГАЗ), and Low (cabin) pressure (ДАВЛЕНИЕ МАЛО). Locks of Armchair or Ejection seat (ЗАМКИ КРЕСЛА) according to Instructions for Cosmonauts. It functioned much like the modern day automobile "Fasten Seatbelts" and the wire for continuity can cleary be seen in some pictures.
(УГЛЕКИСЛЫЙ ГАЗ), (ДАВЛЕНИЕ МАЛО), (ЗАПУСТИ ТДУ ИЛИ ОТМЕНИ СПУСК), and (ЗАМКИ КРЕСЛА) all blink upon illumination with an audible emergency tone. Prepare to Catapult (ПРИГОТОВИТЬСЯ К КАТАПУЛЬТИРОВАНИЮ) illuminates 3-5 seconds after the Instrument Section of the spacecraft separated from the Descent module.
2)Yellow/Amber (Warning): Tones Off (ВЫКЛЮЧИ ЗВУК) , Emergency Transferred (АВАРИЯ ПЕРЕДАЕТСЯ), Manual Management (УПРАВЛЯЙ ВРУЧНУЮ) this light turned on when the code lock was opened by the cosmonaut or by Command radio link enabling a manual sequence of Manual Orientation, Descent III (Manual Descent) and turning on the TDU retrorocket, Orientation on Sun (ОРИЕНТАЦИЯ ПО СОЛНЦУ) to denote the finished operation of the ACO or Automatic System of Orientation or Automatic Solar Orientation (Both were correct), Communication on Call (ВЫЗОВ НА СВЯЗЬ) and the Transfer Occurs (ИДЕТ ПЕРЕДАЧА).
3)Green (Sequential/Information): Descent I, II,III (СПУСК-I, СПУСК-II, СПУСК-III). UHF Transfer (УКВ ПЕРЕДАЧА) , Manual Orientation (РУЧНАЯ ОРИЕНТАЦИЯ)** and Gas Analyzer(ГАЗОАНАЛИЗАТОР)and Permitted TDU Start (ЗАП. ТДУ РАЗРЕШЕН) ** .
Variations Discrepancies and Questions:
Stanislav Marchenko of the NIIAO labels "UHF Regime" instead of "UHF Transfer" (УКВ ПЕРЕДАЧА), however three other pieces of documentation including Instructions for Cosmonauts, show otherwise so I have kept it as is in the illustration. Armchair locks (ЗАМКИ КРЕСЛА) was also not a part of his rendition. Some pictures seem to show a red or orange or light where the current Gas Analyzer light is currently located and this discrepancy is still under investigation. I suspect on some panels the Prepare to Catapult light may have been placed here as it also acted as a sequential light.
*Note: The signal table depicted here is reasonably accurate with all known transparency labels and correct colors known in 2012. The colors represent the signal lights not illuminated. The lettering would become much brighter - while the background of the transparency would not change. The yellow or orange were in reality close "peach or salmon". Differences between this depiction and flown versions are likely minor. For example, the "UHF Transfer" light (per RGANTD) could read "UHF Regime" (per Marchenko). There is evidence from a simulator and the panel in Vostok-1 that the "Prepare to Eject" and "Gas Analyzer" lights traded places. The "Lock Armchair" light is present in the RGANTD document but not on S.T. Marchenko's presentation of the Vostok-1 table.
